School Districts Begin Implementing Vital Security Changes

Schools Across the Nation Are Upgrading Their School Security Systems

School Districts Begin Implementing Vital Security Changes

While security experts agree that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to a school security system, they also report that steps to tighten and upgrade existing systems are needed. Schools in Sugar Land, TX, are taking heed, assessing their current systems, and determining vulnerable areas that need additional support.

In June 2022, President Joe Biden and legislators signed a rare bipartisan agreement in June 2022, providing $1 billion in school funding to create safer environments for students and staff. The Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Education offer programs providing grant money to school districts for security upgrades. Here's how some school districts are using these funds and their own to upgrade their security systems.

The Nation

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), as of 2019, approximately 97% of public schools use controlled access. From 2009 to 2019, the number of schools implementing security cameras increased from 61% to 91%.

Las Vegas, NV

The 2021 school year for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas was marred by reports of violence. In response, the district rolled out several improvements, including upgrading to 4K security cameras on campus and upgrading onboard cameras on school buses. These systems will provide real-time monitoring capabilities.

Erie, PA

Erie School District spent over $1 million on security improvements following a shooting at Erie High School in April 2022. These include door alarm systems with intrusion detection, new exterior doors and door locks, metal detectors, and additional security cameras to prevent blind spots.

New security vestibules require visitors to speak with a school staff member before gaining access through a secure door. In the bathrooms, halo detection sensors detect loud and aggressive behaviors, as well as marijuana, cigarettes, and vaping. In classrooms, roller shades allow staff to pull down shades in the event of an active shooter, preventing them from being able to see inside classrooms.

Omaha, NE

Schools in the Omaha area are considering updating analog cameras, installing two-way communication systems, and an alert system that activates when a door is left open. They are also considering vestibule-style entrances.

The key for schools is to implement these changes before a shooting or another violent incident occurs. Unfortunately, human nature suggests a tendency to put off making changes until we experience an event that makes it mandatory.
