Access Control: A School’s First Line of Defense

Protect Your School’s Perimeters & Classrooms with an Access Control System

Access Control: A School’s First Line of Defense

As the landscape rapidly changes in our schools, upgrading video surveillance systems has been a top priority in order to prevent vandalism, bullying, theft, and violence. And while security cameras and video management systems are critical in enhancing school security, it’s the access control system that acts as a first line of defense and ensures no unwanted visitors enter the property.

On June 7, 2023, Katy ISD conducted a mock, full-scale mass shooter response drill in Katy, TX. The first of its kind in the area, it illustrates the steps the district is implementing to increase school security and safetyùmake sure your school isn’t left behind. Violence in schools is increasing, and protecting students and staff while they should be learning and teaching should be the top priority.

Limiting Access

In the late 20th century, the development of electronic access control systems transformed the lock and key. Then, in the 1990s, RFID technology enabled contactless access control systems. With the advent of smartphones, IP intercoms, and Bluetooth technology, the industry was transformed, and businesses across the nation took advantage of one of the best and most impressive ways to secure their buildings and protect their staff.

But what about schools?

Once seen as safe havens, they’ve increasingly become the target of unwanted visitors and active shooters. In response, about two-thirds of public schools control access to the school grounds, 43% have a panic button or silent alarm, and 78% equip classrooms with locks, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. These systems work together with video surveillance to limit and track access.

Intelligent Access

An intelligent access control system offers one of the most effective strategies for increasing school security. These systems over numerous benefits, including the following:

  • Panic Buttons: Pressing a panic button connects the school to law enforcement when seconds matter.
  • Lockdown & Lockout: Administrators or security can lock one or all doors from a centralized platform. This capability offers quick activation of emergency protocols during internal or external threats, active shooter, and shelter-in-place scenarios.
  • Authorizing Visitors: Authorized visitors must receive a number combination or keycards to gain entrance.
  • Emergency Notifications: Administrators receive immediate alerts if someone attempts entry without the proper credentials. This includes strangers and those on watch lists, such as non-custodial parents and those on criminal registries.
  • Restricted Access: Access is tailored for specific areas according to one’s designation.

Not every school’s security needs are equal. However, access control of perimeter and interior classroom doors should be standard protocol in today's environment.
