The Answers to All Your Questions on School Security Systems

What You Need to Know About School Security Cameras

Could your San Antonio, TX school benefit from an upgraded surveillance system—or its first camera setup? Many families are concerned for their children’s safety as school shooting headlines proliferate over the past decade. You can grant your students and staff peace of mind with a video surveillance system, which, combined with an access control system and alarms, will deter criminals from entering the building.

When adding cameras to school security systems, it’s common to have many questions. That’s why, as Texas-based security experts, we’ve answered our most frequently asked questions below.

Where Should Cameras Be Placed?

Surveillance cameras are an excellent way to intimidate and deter burglars or criminals. The appearance of cameras alone at your entryways may be a reality check to an intruder. They’ll realize, “What will happen when I’m caught, and my identity is captured?” and may change their mind. There’s no guarantee, but the appearance of security cameras has been proven to reduce crime in cities like Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia. If it can work in crime-ridden neighborhoods, why not your school?

For this reason, you’ll want cameras clearly visible from the outside. Install them in overhangs at the entrance and first-story windows. Don’t forget back doors by cafeterias and gymnasiums, which could easily be broken into.

What Is Video Over IP?

Video over IP is an internet-based method of transmitting video content in the same way cables have for years. Unlike an analog system, it doesn’t require a local recording device, only your school’s network. Consider connecting your cameras to a fiber optic cabling system for faster retrieval speed, enhanced video clarity, and fewer lapses in footage.

How Much Storage Is Needed?

With cameras running all day long, lots of footage racks up. You can reduce the amount of video recorded by incorporating motion sensors in your security system. That way, video will only start when activity is detected. You can set your cameras to override old footage after a determined length of time—but be careful that it’s enough for you to retrieve in times of need. Higher quality video is excellent for catching criminals but also leads to larger files. You may want to consider using a cloud storage service rather than physical storage. That way, it’s accessible from any computer and can’t be tampered with or destroyed.

Can We Incorporate Analog Cameras?

Many school districts still use older analog cameras that function fine. Analog cameras can be integrated into a network system by connecting to the video server, which will digitize, compress, and transmit information over the network. However, the image quality will likely not be as clear as an IP system. For higher definition and clearer nighttime recordings, a digital camera system is a safe option.
